Why lectionary?

One of the first questions I want to get out of the way is "why lectionary?"  Perhaps for those who have consistently used the lectionary for preaching and worship their response would be "why not lectionary, duh?"  But for those from a "free" church or "Spirit-led" preaching and worship format, the questions almost always is "why lectionary?"  As a part of the latter group, I recognize that using the lectionary week after week might cause some difficulty.

But if you'll permit me, I'll answer that question with another question.  How do you organize your calendar?  Maybe your calendar follows a January-December format, most calendars do.  But there are other forms of calendars; the school-based calendar, the fiscal calendar, the sports calendar (depending on which sport you follow).  There is also another calendar, the Christian Calendar.  This calendar is based on the events that take place in the life of Christ, except for what's called "ordinary" or "kingdom" time, in that case, we consider the life of the church, but even the life of the church is to be more or less the reflection of Christ.

So, "why lectionary"?  Because the lectionary helps connect the Scriptures to the life of Christ throughout the year and I can think of no better calendar for a Christian to keep than the Christian calendar.  To be brought back often to the life of Christ and consider how we as the Church should reflect our Savior, or in Biblical language, how we as the body should point to our Head.
